Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood — primarily human blood — and have undergone a dramatic resurgence across the United States over the past two decades. Montana has not been immune to this trend, with reports from hotels, vacation rentals, apartment complexes, college dormitories, and single-family homes increasing steadily.

Bed bugs are not a sign of uncleanliness. They are introduced through travel, secondhand furniture, luggage, and clothing — and can be found in luxury hotels and immaculate homes just as easily as anywhere else. Once introduced, they are extraordinarily difficult to eliminate because of their ability to hide in incredibly tight spaces, their resistance to many pesticides, and their capacity to survive for months without feeding.

An adult bed bug is roughly the size of an apple seed — flat, reddish-brown, and almost perfectly shaped for sliding into mattress seams, box spring tufts, electrical outlet covers, picture frames, and behind baseboards. They are almost entirely nocturnal, feeding while hosts sleep, and return to harborage before dawn. Many people do not realize they have an infestation until it is well-established.

SIGNS OF INFESTATION

How to Identify a Bed Bug Infestation

  • Bite marks on skin — Small, red, itchy welts often appearing in a line or cluster on arms, neck, shoulders, and legs. Not everyone reacts to bites — some people show no marks at all.

  • Bloodstains on sheets — Small rust-colored spots from crushed bugs or bite sites on pillowcases and sheets.

  • Dark fecal spots — Tiny dark brown or black ink-like spots on mattress seams, along baseboards, and on walls near the bed.

  • Shed skins (exuviae) — Translucent yellow-brown shed skins found in mattress tufts, furniture joints, and behind headboards.

  • Live bugs — Small, flat, reddish-brown insects in mattress seams, under mattress tags, or in the joints of the bed frame.

  • Sweet, musty odor — A distinct, slightly sweet, coriander-like odor in heavily infested rooms.

HEALTH RISKS

Bed bug bites cause itchy welts in most people, with some individuals experiencing more significant allergic reactions including large welts, blistering, and systemic allergic responses. Secondary skin infections from scratching are a real concern. Bed bugs are not known to transmit infectious diseases, but the psychological impact of an infestation is significant — anxiety, insomnia, and emotional distress are commonly reported by those dealing with bed bug infestations. In some cases, the psychological effects persist long after the infestation is eliminated.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

Bed bugs do not damage structures but can render mattresses, furniture, and bedding unusable due to fecal staining and the need for disposal in severe infestations. The cost of replacing infested items can be substantial.
