There are 15 different species of bats known in Montana. In the western side of the State we mainly will notice two kinds. The Big Brown Bat, and the Little Brown Myotis. All species of bats are extremely important to the ecosystem. It has been theorized that one single Little Brown Myotis can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single night.

Although these creatures are helpful to have around for your general insect pest management, they can become expensive pests themselves.

Bats can carry and spread diseases such as rabies, Ebola, and Marburg virus. Their guano or feces can also contract a fungal disease known as Histoplasmosis. On the less serious side of the issues they cause, they can create large piles of guano on decks, and in attic spaces. Their noises can often be disrupting to homeowners as well.

Most bats that remain in Montana year round are small bachelor colonies which can range from a handful to a couple dozen bats.

In May and especially in June and July large maternal colonies of hundreds to thousands of bats arrive. When these maternal colonies take up residence inside a home, there is little that a pest professional can do as they will begin rearing pups and their access points to the home cannot be closed or the young bats will die.

Because of this issue in migration, if bats are noticed in or around a property, it is strongly recommended to have a professional inspect the location to determine if work can be performed to remove the bats. This work typically occurs before the maternal colonies arrive in the spring and after they have left in the fall.
