Tips to Keep Wasps Away

Wasps can quickly turn your yard or patio from relaxing to stressful. Their stings are painful, and for people with allergies, they can be dangerous. Even if you’re not allergic, wasps can make it hard to enjoy meals outdoors, work in your garden, or let kids play in the yard.

The good news is that you can take simple steps to make your home and yard less appealing to them. Here’s how:

ree

1. Remove the Things That Attract Wasps

Wasps are always looking for food and shelter. If they find it around your home, they’ll keep coming back—and may even build a nest nearby.

  • Clean up food and drinks quickly after eating outside. Wasps are drawn to sugary drinks, leftover meat, and food scraps.

  • Keep trash and recycling bins tightly closed. Even a small gap in the lid can attract them.

  • Avoid strong, sweet-smelling perfumes and lotions when you plan to be outside. These scents can make wasps think there’s food nearby.

  • Cover food and drinks when eating outdoors. Use mesh food covers or simply keep lids on cups and bottles.

2. Seal Off Their Entry Points

Wasps like to build nests in sheltered spaces—especially ones that protect them from wind and rain. Closing off these areas makes your home less inviting.

  • Check your home’s outside walls for cracks, holes, or small gaps and seal them with caulk or foam.

  • Install or repair window and door screens to stop wasps from flying inside.

  • Cover chimneys, vents, and crawl space openings with fine wire mesh. This keeps wasps from sneaking in while still allowing air to flow.

3. Use Natural Deterrents

You don’t always need strong chemicals to keep wasps away. Some natural options can help reduce their interest in your space.

  • Plant wasp-repelling plants like mint, eucalyptus, marigolds, or citronella. The scent can help discourage them from hanging around.

  • Hang wasp traps in areas where you see the most activity. These lure wasps away from where you spend time.

  • Use fake wasp nests. Wasps are territorial and often won’t build a nest near another one. Hanging a fake nest can trick them into staying away.

Why It’s Important to Act Early

Once wasps build a nest, they can become aggressive when you get close to it. A small nest can grow quickly during the summer, so it’s best to deal with the problem before it gets out of hand.
