Why Do I Have Ants in My House When There's No Food Around?

Ants

If you've spotted ants marching across your kitchen counter or bathroom floor and there's nothing for them to eat, you're not imagining things — and you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get from homeowners across Missoula and Western Montana.

The short answer can be that most ants entering Montana homes aren't looking for food at all. They're looking for moisture.

It's Usually About Water, Not Food

Several ant species common to Western Montana — including odorous house ants and moisture ants — are drawn indoors primarily by humidity and water sources, not crumbs on the counter. If you're seeing ants in these spots, moisture is likely the real culprit:

  • Around bathroom sinks, tubs, or toilets

  • Near leaky pipes under kitchen sinks

  • Along window sills after rain

  • In damp basements or crawl spaces

  • Near houseplants that are watered frequently

Why Montana Homes Are Especially Susceptible

Western Montana's freeze-thaw cycles create small cracks in foundations and siding over time. These tiny gaps become entry points, and ants will follow a moisture trail right through them — especially during spring snowmelt or after a heavy rain.

Older homes in the Missoula area, with their original foundations and plumbing, tend to see this more than newer builds.

What This Means for Treatment

This is exactly why store-bought ant traps marketed around "food bait" often don't work — they're solving the wrong problem. If moisture is what's attracting the colony, a food-based bait won't address the source.

Effective ant control starts with finding the moisture source, not just killing the ants you can see.

When to Call a Professional

If you've ruled out food and you're still seeing a steady trail of ants, it's worth having a professional inspect for hidden moisture issues — something most homeowners can't fully diagnose on their own.
